Chapter 1: The New House

Sarah stood in front of the old, creaky house her family had just moved into. It was bigger than their previous one, with high ceilings and old wooden floors that seemed to groan under their own weight. She shivered slightly, feeling a cold breeze despite the warm afternoon.

"Well, it looks creepy," Lucas said, eyeing the house suspiciously. He was only twelve but always quick to judge things that scared him. "I hope there aren't any ghosts in there."

"Don't be silly, Lucas," Sarah replied, though she wasn’t entirely convinced herself. She'd heard rumors about this house, whispers from the kids at school about strange noises and flickering lights. But she tried to ignore them.

Their mom called from the doorway, "Come on, kids! Help me unpack. And be careful with those boxes; the bathroom upstairs is a bit... temperamental."

"Temperamental?" Sarah muttered under her breath. "What does that even mean?"

Chapter 2: A Warning from Mrs. Carter

Later that evening, their neighbor, Mrs. Carter, came over with a plate of cookies. She was a sweet old lady, with kind eyes and a smile that didn’t quite reach them.

"Welcome to the neighborhood!" she said, handing the cookies to Sarah’s mom. "I see you've moved into the old Thomas house. Quite a history, that one."

"History?" Sarah asked, her curiosity piqued.

Mrs. Carter looked at her with a mysterious expression. "Oh, yes. You see, the last family that lived here... they moved out rather quickly. Something about the bathroom on the second floor." She paused as if considering whether to continue. "They said it was haunted."

"Haunted?" Lucas burst out laughing. "Come on, there are no such things as ghosts!"

"Believe what you want, young man," Mrs. Carter said, her tone suddenly serious. "But if you ever hear the water running by itself or see steam on the mirror without any reason, you’d best stay away from that bathroom."

Sarah felt a chill run down her spine. She exchanged a nervous glance with Emily, who was visiting for dinner. Emily, however, seemed more excited than scared.

"This is so cool!" Emily whispered to Sarah as Mrs. Carter left. "We've got to check it out!"

Chapter 3: The First Encounter

That night, as everyone was settling in, Sarah decided to take a shower in the upstairs bathroom. She had almost forgotten Mrs. Carter's words when suddenly, the lights flickered. The temperature in the room dropped sharply, and she could see her breath forming small puffs of mist in the air.

"Okay, that’s weird," she whispered to herself, trying to stay calm.

Just as she reached for the faucet to turn on the shower, she heard a soft whisper. It was faint at first, like a breeze rustling leaves, but it gradually grew louder, forming words.

"Get... out..."

Sarah froze. She looked around the room, but there was no one there. The voice seemed to be coming from behind her, yet when she turned to look, all she saw was her own reflection in the foggy mirror.

But then, she noticed something that made her blood run cold. There was a handprint on the mirror—a handprint that wasn’t hers. It was smeared and dripped as though it had been made by something wet, something not quite human.

Sarah screamed and ran out of the bathroom, almost crashing into Lucas, who was standing in the hallway.

"What happened?" he asked, eyes wide with panic.

"There's... there's something in the bathroom!" Sarah stammered. "A ghost!"

Lucas rolled his eyes but looked worried. "You’ve been watching too many horror movies. There’s no such thing as ghosts."

"But I saw it!" Sarah insisted, her voice trembling. "There was a handprint on the mirror, and I heard a voice telling me to get out!"

"Maybe it was just the steam," Lucas said, trying to rationalize. "Mirrors do weird stuff sometimes."

Chapter 4: Investigating the Haunting

The next day, Sarah and Emily decided to do some research about the house. They went to the library and searched for anything they could find on the old Thomas house. What they discovered sent chills down their spines.

"It says here that a woman named Margaret Thomas died in that house," Emily read aloud from an old newspaper article. "She was found in the upstairs bathroom, and no one knows exactly how she died. Some say she drowned, but others think it was something more... sinister."

"Do you think it’s her?" Sarah asked, her voice barely a whisper.

"It has to be," Emily said, her eyes wide with excitement. "We need to find out what she wants. Maybe she's trying to communicate with you!"

That evening, armed with a flashlight and a notepad, Sarah and Emily went back to the upstairs bathroom. They planned to ask the ghost questions and see if it would respond.

"Margaret Thomas," Sarah called out nervously, "if you’re here, please show us a sign."

For a moment, nothing happened. Then, the lights flickered, and the temperature dropped again. A soft whisper echoed in the room.

"Leave... me... alone..."

Sarah and Emily exchanged terrified glances. "What do you want?" Sarah asked, her voice shaking.

Suddenly, the faucet turned on by itself, and water started pouring out, turning red as though mixed with blood. Emily screamed, dropping the flashlight, which rolled across the floor, casting eerie shadows on the walls.

Chapter 5: The Final Confrontation

Sarah knew they had to do something to stop this haunting before it got worse. The next day, she decided to talk to Mrs. Carter again, hoping the old woman would have answers.

"Mrs. Carter," Sarah said when they met in the garden, "what do you know about Margaret Thomas? How do we make her leave us alone?"

Mrs. Carter's face turned serious. "Margaret's spirit is restless because she died in a terrible way. They say she was betrayed by someone she loved, and now her soul can't find peace. To set her free, you must find her locket. It holds a picture of her and the person who betrayed her. Burn the locket, and she will finally be at rest."

Sarah and Lucas searched the house top to bottom until, in the attic, they found an old, dusty box. Inside was the locket, just as Mrs. Carter had described.

With trembling hands, Sarah opened the locket and saw a faded picture of Margaret and a man with cold, dark eyes. "This must be the man who betrayed her," she said.

They took the locket to the backyard and, with Emily's help, set it on fire. As the locket burned, a gust of cold wind blew through the yard, and they heard a faint whisper.

"Thank... you..."

The temperature in the house returned to normal, and the bathroom no longer felt cold or eerie. The handprints disappeared from the mirror, and the whispers stopped.

Epilogue

A week later, Sarah and her family settled into their new life, no longer haunted by the presence in the bathroom. But every now and then, when Sarah passed by the mirror, she thought she saw a flicker of movement out of the corner of her eye—a fleeting glimpse of Margaret Thomas, smiling at her, finally at peace.
